for the white house, now. and with 28 days to go, a new poll shows mitt romney surging into the lead after his debate win last week. it's "your voice, your vote." and jake tapper is on the trail in the battleground ohio. good morning, jake. >> reporter: good morning, george. both candidates expected in the critical buckeye state today when new polls indicating mitt romney got a big bounce out of his debate performance last week, even leading in one poll. it appears to be a new day and a new race. just a few weeks ago, some in the media and politics were preparing mitt romney's campaign obituary. but he not only has a new lease on life, he has momentum. a new poll from the pew research center, shows romney pulling ahead of the president in likely voters. the bounce romney was hoping for, following his powell lished debate performance last wednesday. one he noted at a rally in virginia. >> that was a good debate. >> reporter: earlier in the day, romney sought to capitalize on the tumult in the muslim world. >> we must make clear through actions, not just actions, that their nuclear pursuit won't

for mitt romney in those national polls, the daily tracking national polls. he's definitely picked up. also has a lot more excitement with his crowds right now, and it seems like it's re-energized his campaign but what i'll watch are those polls in the key battleground states, places like ohio, virginia, florida, colorado. those have to start closing up for mitt romney, as well. so far they haven't, in fact, there is a new poll out this morning coming out of the university of denver showing barack obama maintains a four-point lead in colorado. >> and it is the battleground states where this race will be won. and lost. >> absolutely. >> very quickly, vice presidential race. any precedent for a vice presidential debate impacting the trajectory of a race? >> not -- probably one of the most serious debate moments ever is that debate moment where lloyd bentson took on dan quayle and said "you're no jack kennedy," but in the end george h.w. bush still won that race. >> george stephanopoulos, thank you very much. great to see you here on the set this morning. george has a big show this morning fea

polls show him gaining ground, and his crowds have picked up, and last night in florida, romney opened up telling about his last visit with an old friend paralyzed in a tragic accident. >> they pushed his wheelchair forward, and he came up, and i reached over and put my arm on his shoulder, and i whispered into his ear, and i said, billy, i love you, and god bless you. i got a call from a friend that he died the next day after that visit. it's rare that you get the chance to tell someone how much you love them when you still can. >> can romney keep gaining ground, or will president obama maintain his advantage in those battleground states that matter most? we'll look at the race from all angles this morning and we begin with the campaign's ed gillespie for mitt romney, robert gibbs for barack obama and, robert, let me begin with you. how much difference did governor romney make wednesday night? >> well, look, george, i think governor romney had a masterful theatrical performance just this past week, but the underpinnings and foundation of that performance were fundamentally dishonest.

. >> reporter: with the polls tightening, the president needs to fire up his base while mitt romney needs to convert 2008 obama voters. last night in kentucky, they got a lot of help from their running mates. rob, paula. back to you. >> thank you, karen. as karen alluded to -- polls are tight. dead heat in virginia. obama up one in florida. doing well in ohio up by six. in colorado, romney is ahead by a point now. virginia is still tight. obama is up by five there. wisconsin up by three. so it really is -- the country watches, but really about a cluster, maybe six, eight states will make or break this race. romney made up a lot of ground since last week's debate for sure. >> i don't know if this one will move the needle. both appealed to their base really. joe biden didn't make any fatal flaws. and neither did paul ryan in this one. but, you know let everybody spin it how they want. i looked at six different polls. three gave it to biden. three gave it to paul ryan. >> it's a draw essentially. >> pretty much is a draw. >> again, i know the media's inclination, folk's inclinatio

happened last week, democrats got, lost their energy in the race and the polls changed. >> nicolle, one of the things that governor romney had to do is reassure people about who they are. did he get that done? >> i think he did. starting tomorrow morning, going through the weekend into tuesday, and i think what republicans are going to drive is this question that biden opened up about what they knew and when they knew it with the attacks in benghazi. i think there was serious news that was made. rar th martha should clear her schedule. what she was able to do tonight, both men made some news and both of these men are frankly better at this than the men that they work for at the top of their ticket. but by being better, they said more and i feel like republicans feel like they have fresh ammunition on this growing scandal, which is how the right seeps the investigation into the attacks and the tragic death of our ambassador in libya. >> the vice president said, we didn't know about the security concerns in benghazi in particular, clearly state department officials did. >> well, the vice
